POJOKSINEMA – Film To Catch a Killer dimulai dengan sebuah peristiwa tragis di malam pergantian tahun, seorang penembak jitu berhasil menewaskan 29 orang. Kepala penyelidik FBI Geoffrey Lammark (Ben Mendelsohn) memaparkan kepada Departemen Kepolisian Baltimore bahwa tersangka memliki prilaku dan karakter khusus.

Ada alasan kuat kenapa si penembak melakukannya, yakni; seseorang mencintainya, seseorang melatihnya, dan seseorang menjual senjata itu kepadanya. Di antara mereka yang mendengarkan penjelasan Lammark, ada polisi muda bernama Eleanor (Shailene Woodley, sebagai produser), yang merupakan responden pertama pada malam penyerangan itu.

Naskah cerita film thriller,  To Catch a Killer  ditulis sutradara Damian Szifron bersama Jonathan Wakeham. Plot ceritanya menggunakan formula film pembunuh berantai tapi mengkritik sistem yang gagal, Film ini juga memotret segala hal mulai politisi, FBI, kepolisian, media, carut marut kompleks industri militer hingga perawatan kesehatan mental.

Sayangnya, ambisi film ini mengalahkan kemampuan film itu sendiri. Terlalu banyak pesan yang ingin disampaikan secara visual, lalu membuat film ini tidak garang sama sekali. Terlalu banyak muatan dialog yang njelimet.

Dedikasi Szifron dan sinematografer Javier Juliá penuh gaya, akhirnya terhambat oleh plot padat dan karatakter yang tidak berkembang. Sementara saya (penulis) keasikkan menikmati karakter Woodley’s Eleanor yang sedikit mirip dengan karakter Angelia Jolie dalam The Bone Collector (1990) karya Phillip Noyce.

Kerusakan sistem Korup, Merusak Filmnya

Setelah Eleanor tiba di lokasi penembakan massal tadi, sebuah apartemen di dekatnya meledak. Polisi dan FBI menyelidiki sisa-sisa apartemen yang dibom.

Setelah menemukan kotoran dari toilet apartemen, mereka menemukan sedikit bukti pelakunya kekurangan zat besi dan, mungkin sosok penembak adalah vegetarian. Analisa Eleanor tentang kemampuan dan karakter si pelaku menarik perhatian Lammark.
